Steve Pierce is a self-serving scoundrel

Public lands belong to all of us. Moreover, those lands belong to future generations and we are obligated to preserve those lands for the future.

Steve Pierce feigns outrage at an imperial president’s “land grab.” Millionaire Pierce is an oil man, as are most of his cronies. They got, get, and stay rich exploiting resources often obtained from public land and selling those resources to the customers they pretend to care deeply about, such as ATV owners. Extraction of oil often destroys the location, as does driving irresponsibly. (I would love to own a silent electric ATV. The infernal combustion engine destroys the peace, just as off-road joy-riding destroys the land we ALL own.)

Securing public land preserves our lands from exploitation and destruction by a few for their own profit or pleasure.

Obama’s land grab a recipe for disaster | Albuquerque Journal News

I believe that you are the best stewards of the local environment and are far more knowledgeable of the impact our way of life has on the landscape than any agency official, cabinet secretary or president. …

New Mexicans understand what it means to protect the environment. You understand that economic opportunity and a clean place to live are not mutually exclusive.

Bernalillo County Probate Court

Democrat – Willow Misty Parks

Judge Willow Misty Parks has been on the probate bench since 2010 and has a clear understanding of the limits of her court’s jurisdiction and an empathy for the non-lawyers who make up the majority of people who come before her. That understanding and empathy, combined with a law degree and MBA, have allowed her to streamline the court’s business even as its new case load has increased – from 612 in 2011 to 841 in 2013. That efficiency is good news for everyone who has business with the court.

Under Parks’ steady hand, the county’s part-time judgeship runs like a full-time professional business. There is no Republican challenger; the Journal recommends Democratic voters keep her on the bench.

StarTrek: Into Darkness (1 star)

I streamed StarTrek Into Darkness, though it was much too long. So much potential wasted. I’m sure the NRA will be delighted to find machine guns are widely used in another 250 years. Why do StarFleet dress uniforms look like Soviet uniforms? Is the militarization of space a fait accompli? (Rhetorical, already true, but with fewer weapons, as far as I know.)

In the previous movie, I objected to a technique Abrams seems to love: the fake flare, the sliver of light across the screen. It’s just annoying and pointlessly overused.

Why do so many major characters have blue eyes — even a Klingon? Why touch base with the original series (Pike, Mudd, tribbles, Kahn, Nimoy) but depart so radically from that story line? I assume this is an alternate timeline.

Quinto as Spock is the only reason to watch this or future episodes. Of course, Spock is every nerd’s favorite, but he is the only character or actor who isn’t locked into mimicking the original. This is a different, and better Spock. Certainly, Spock has to be different thanks to most interesting twist: His girlfriend, the action-figure away-team member Uhuru. (That worked with Sheldon on the Big Bang, not to compare AFF to Uhuru.) I hope he sports a goatee in a future episode. (However, Spock’s wig flops oddly when he runs.)

I hated the old Bones, so duplicating him is no accomplishment. Ditto Scotty and Checkov. I do like the new Sulu. I enjoy seeing John Cho in any role. I wonder how he feels as a Korean-American playing a character with a Japanese surname.

Congratulation to Pino and the writers for making me hate this Kirk even more than the original. This guy is a raging bull in a china shop, completely out of control. And almost a superman himself, kicking the warp drive into gear. Gah!

What happened to the science in science fiction? One joy of the series (plural) was they peppered their dialog with real science. They inspired discussions of light speed, tachyons and so much more. (I can’t be the only one who thought “Jefferies tube!” in one scene.) More money just means more CGI for bigger crashes. Even Kahn, as superior as he is, is an ass-kicking ninja foremost.

Oh, don’t get me started on Kahn, one of the finest villains in TV history. Montalban himself rebooted the series from TV to movie. Now, a guy who could play Data in a future movie replaces the charismatic, sexy Kahn.

I think every TV series of this franchise has contributed more in character, plot, and science than any of the movies. What a waste. All of it. I hope that reanimated tribble eats the whole damn ship.

Albuquerque Journal endorses Shannon Bulman for Santa Fe County probate judge – VOTE!

Santa Fe, New Mexico News endorsements | Albuquerque Journal News

Journal North endorses the following candidates for local offices in the June 3 Democratic primary:

Santa Fe County probate judge: Shannon Broderick Bulman

A lawyer with 24 years of experience, including as a trainer for probate judges and their staffs, and representing families in probating estates, Bulman is by far the best qualified candidate. Bulman wants to make the court more transparent, including with online court records, and more accessible when families are faced with the difficult experience of working through the estates of the deceased.

We can’t do anything to control the Rich

The Kochtopus has the nation in a stranglehold. It’s really more like the Alien covering our faces and shoving itself down our throats.

Koch brothers mania arrives at the Capitol By Dana Milbank May 22 at 8:30 am

Some groups have proposed boycotts of Koch brothers’ products, but such efforts don’t seem to grasp how deeply the Koch tentacles extend into Americans’ daily lives – in ways the average consumer can’t possibly comprehend. Were they a single person, David and Charles would pass Bill Gates as the richest man in the world. Their holdings include oil, chemicals, manufacturing, minerals, fertilizers and a range of consumer products. Lycra in your bathing suit, undergarments or exercise clothing? Koch brothers. CoolMax fabric wicking sweat from your skin? Kochs. Stainmaster cleaning your carpet? Kochs again. Dacron fabric, Vanity Fair napkins, Angel Soft or Quilted Northern toilet paper, Brawny or Sparkle paper towels, Dixie cups? Koch, Koch, Koch, Koch, Koch, Koch and Koch.

To test the depths of Americans’ Koch dependency, I went to the screening with a shopping bag full of Koch products. I offered them as free samples after the screening of “Koch Brothers Exposed.” Even after hearing all of Greenwald’s allegations about the Koch brothers’ evils, the attendees made off with every last roll of Angel Soft and Brawny, and even took the Lycra pantyhose and the Dixie cups.

Even those who lament what the Kochs do with their money are contributors to the brothers’ fortune.

Is knee-to-balls taught at the APD police academy? Seems so.

Officer Dear shot a teenage girl last month. His video camera wasn’t on. A year earlier, his video camera wasn’t on when he kneed a speeder in the groin. Last month, a different cop kneed a DWI suspect in the groin so hard the victim lost a testicle.

  • Does the police academy teach officers to knee non-violent citizens in the groin?
  • Has anyone ever been reprimanded at APD for violence against non-violent citizens?

I want to hear from the police academy. I want all of the instructors to stand up and say we NEVER encourage our students to use violence in a non-violent situation and we ALWAYS tell them to use their video cameras. I want to hear that from every single instructor at the police academy. If they can’t all say that honestly, it’s time for heads to roll at the academy. Then, the mayor can fire police supervisors who don’t punish violent cops.

in February 2013, Dear pulled a man over for speeding. The man later filed a citizen complaint, alleging Dear used excessive force by pulling him out of his car, kicking him in the genitals and setting the handcuffs too tight.

Dear denied the excessive force allegations and said his lapel camera died soon after he approached the man. It’s unclear from the file whether he was disciplined.
