What befell this sparrow
\nwrithing on our porch
\none wing extended
\nleg out, as if,
\nstepping into space
\nbut for the head twisted back.
\nAre you watching me, Lord?<\/p>\n
Wisdom says leave it
\ntime may heal it or end its pain,
\nbut I cannot suffer at a distance.
\nI scoop it up into the nest of my hand.<\/p>\n
It slows, the head turns forward
\nas the wing contracts but
\none little foot clutches my finger
\nlike a limb.<\/p>\n
Rest here and wait
\nfor mama to come
\nas she has every other time
\nyou needed her.<\/p>\n
Its eye stares at this feeble giant
\nthen closes slowly
\nas a chorus in the trees
\nsings its soul to heaven
\nand I weep. <\/p>\n
