Trump chatbots overwhelmed similar programs supporting Hillary Clinton five to one in the days leading up to the presidential election, according to a report published Thursday by researchers at Oxford University. <\/p>\n<p>The chatbots \u2014 basic software programs with a bit of artificial intelligence and rudimentary communication skills \u2014 would send messages on Twitter based on a topic, usually defined on the social network by a word preceded by a hashtag symbol, like #Clinton. <\/p>\n<p>Their purpose: to rant, confuse people on facts, or simply muddy discussions, said Philip N. Howard, a sociologist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oii.ox.ac.uk\/\">Oxford Internet Institute<\/a> and one of the authors of the report. <\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/facebook-fake-news-writer-%e2%80%98i-think-donald-trump-is-in-the-white-house-because-of-me%e2%80%99\/ar-AAkprvV?li=BBnb7Kz\">Facebook fake-news writer: \u2018I think Donald Trump is in the White House because of me\u2019<\/a> The Washington Post Caitlin Dewey<\/h3>\n<p>Horner has found the fake-news ecosystem growing more crowded, more political and vastly more influential: In March, Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20161013\/23470435795\/donald-trumps-son-campaign-manager-both-tweet-obviously-fake-story.shtml\">son Eric<\/a> and his then-campaign manager, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/donald-trumps-campaign-manager-tweeted-out-link-to-a-hoax-news-story\/\">Corey Lewandowski<\/a>, even tweeted links to one of Horner\u2019s faux-articles.
