The incoming head of the Environment and Public Works Committee, Sen. James Inhofe<\/a> of Oklahoma \u2014 a state where coal is not a big industry \u2014 has called climate change a \u201choax\u201d and a conspiracy to \u201cshut down this machine called America.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cGod\u2019s still up there,\u201d Inhofe said on a radio program in 2012<\/a>. \u201cThe arrogance of people to think that we, human beings, would be able to change what He is doing in the climate is, to me, outrageous.\u201d <\/p>\n

Inhofe\u2019s view is theologically questionable and scientifically absurd, but there you have it: The senator with the most power to affect U.S. environmental policy does not believe climate change is conceivable, let alone real. <\/p>\n

The problem for Republicans who want to stall climate action is that Obama can carry out his agenda without them. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
