He <\/p>\n<p>might as well wish to be a dictator. <span class=\"sig\">mjh<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a \n\nhref=\"http:\/\/seven.com.au\/news\/topstories\/111953\">Us soldiers barred from torture<\/a> By Liz Sidoti<\/p>\n<p>The US Senate delivered <\/p>\n<p><strong>a rare wartime rebuke to President George W Bush<\/strong> on Thursday by explicitly barring American soldiers from torturing or <\/p>\n<p>maltreating prisoners. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>New strict US military interrogation guidelines were <strong>passed overwhelmingly by 90 votes<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>to nine in the Republican-controlled Senate despite White House opposition.<\/p>\n<p>The senators approved an amendment that prohibits <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment&#8221; against anyone in US government custody, regardless of where they are held.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal was sponsored by Republican Senator John McCain, who was held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>It requires <\/p>\n<p>all US military members to follow procedures in the Army Field Manual when they detain and interrogate terrorism suspects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bush administration officials say the legislation will limit the president&#8217;s authority and flexibility in war.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/10\/07\/AR2005100701662.html\">House GOP May Try to Weaken Detainee <\/p>\n<p>Rules<\/a> By LIZ SIDOTI<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON &#8212; <strong>Leading House Republicans signaled Friday that they will try to weaken a Senate <\/p>\n<p>effort to limit interrogation techniques that U.S. service members can use on terrorism suspects.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Their remarks made <\/p>\n<p>clear that the language in the Senate-passed military spending bill faces uncertain prospects in bargaining between the Senate and House. <\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The White House said in a statement that advisers would recommend a veto of the spending bill if it includes language that <\/p>\n<p>would hurt efforts in the war on terror by limiting the president&#8217;s authority and flexibility. Last summer, Vice President Dick Cheney <\/p>\n<p>came to Capitol Hill to pressure McCain, Warner and Sen.
