The wealthy exploited the grass-roots anger of the tea party all along \u2014 such as when Glenn Beck, the movement\u2019s de facto leader, urged his followers in 2010 to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/10\/19\/AR2010101906085.html\">donate to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>But corporate interests were displeased that the brinkmanship practiced by tea party lawmakers sometimes turned out to be bad for business. After the government shutdown in the fall, the chamber announced that it would spend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2014\/01\/11\/conservatives-question-us-chamber-plan-to-spend-millions-to-defeat-tea-party\/\">$50 million in the 2014 GOP primaries<\/a> to help \u201cpro-business\u201d Republicans beat tea party candidates. &#8230;  <\/p>\n<p>[A special election in Florida was won by David Jolly, a corporate lobbyist with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/florida\/statements\/2013\/dec\/27\/kathleen-peters\/david-jolly-gave-almost-30000-keep-democrats-congr\/\">history of giving to Democratic candidates <\/a>as well as Republicans. His] good showing is a happy event for the influence industry \u2014 and Democrats are equally exultant. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has just begun running a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GgrzBM9pNx0&amp;feature=youtu.be\">TV ad<\/a> showing a video clip of Jolly in which he says, <strong><font style=\"background-color: #ffc000\">\u201cI have been a registered lobbyist and I\u2019m proud of the work that I\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/font><\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Federal records show that Jolly, once an aide to Young, <strong><font style=\"background-color: #ffc000\">built a <\/font><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/lobbyist.php?id=Jolly%2C%20David&amp;id=Y0000008142L&amp;year=2013\"><strong><font style=\"background-color: #ffc000\">healthy business as a lobbyist<\/font><\/strong><\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/politics\/local\/david-jolly-faces-unique-challenge-as-lobbyist-trying-to-win-seat-in\/2156405\">defense contractors and other<\/a>s seeking a larger piece of the federal pie: corporations, local governments, universities, hospitals, broadcasters and a group that favored expanded oil drilling.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/dana-milbank-business-interests-again-on-upswing-in-gop\/2014\/01\/21\/f3304b20-82e0-11e3-8099-9181471f7aaf_story.html?wprss=rss_dana-milbank\">Dana Milbank: Business interests again on upswing in GOP &#8211; The Washington Post<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dana Milbank: Business interests again on upswing in GOP &#8211; The Washington Post Arguably, corporations never really lost their hold on the Republican Party (and a somewhat looser grip on the Democrats).
