The martial arts film is ostensibly historical and about events surrounding the one and only female Emperor of China, which brings to mind two of my favorite Xena episodes about Lao Ma \u2013 watch those sometime. <\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this movie is at least 30 minutes too long. However, there are several interesting characters and many great visuals throughout the movie. In fact, I fast-forwarded through the movie a second time just to watch a few fights and was amazed I spent another 90 minutes watching a movie that I\u2019m ambivalently recommending to fans of the genre (after you see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/viddy\/5-stars\/iron-monkey-5-stars\/\">Iron Monkey<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/viddy\/jade-warrior-4-7-stars\/\">Jade Warrior<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The movie gets really weird after Detective Dee asks a friend, \u201cDo you remember Donkey Wang?\u201d Later: \u201cDoctor Donkey Wang with the scabies?\u201d I don\u2019t know if that picks something up in the translation.<\/p>\n<p>Note, the movie is in Chinese with subtitles, which did not work for me in Roku but were available in <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.microsoft.com\/webpdp\/en-US\/app\/netflix\/d8d75bb2-c5cd-44f2-8c26-c1d1ae5b13fa\">the vastly superior Windows 8 app<\/a>.&#160; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1123373\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; display: inline\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.boitenoire.com\/media\/catalog\/product\/cache\/1\/image\/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95\/d\/e\/detective_dee_and_the_mystery_of_the_phantom_flame_dvd_.jpg\" \/>Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) &#8211; IMDb<\/a> <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>An exiled detective is recruited to solve a series of mysterious deaths that threaten to delay the inauguration of Empress Wu. <\/p>\n<h6>Director: <\/h6>\n<p>   <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0007139\/\">Hark Tsui<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1123373\/\">Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) &#8211; IMDb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/category\/viddy\/5-stars\/\">my 5 start favorites<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been waiting for this movie to be available for streaming.
