The gals put it between their knees . . . \u2014 Foster Friess, Feb. 16, 2012<\/p>\n Friess, a major financial supporter of presidential wannabe Rick Santorum, managed to capture something telling and important about the way he and other social conservatives see this country.<\/p>\n It has been argued that they seek to forestall the future, to interdict social and demographic trends suggesting tomorrow\u2019s America will be gayer, browner and more Islamic than today\u2019s.<\/p>\n But that\u2019s only half the story, isn\u2019t it? Friess\u2019 \u201cjoke\u201d suggests they seek not just to challenge tomorrow\u2019s changes, but also yesterday\u2019s. They seek to re-impose what they regard as \u201cthe good old days,\u201d as in a time when women were \u201cgals\u201d to be lectured by doctors on their sexual morality.<\/p>\n That should be an eye-opener for those who feel yesterday\u2019s victories are impervious to challenge or change.<\/font> Maybe it is time to wonder if that assurance is not misplaced.
