Macros can reveal details we might otherwise miss. Most macro shots involve putting the lens as close to the subject as one can get, which can create problems with depth of field and the shadow of the lens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/wp-content\/mine\/2011\/05\/DSC02689.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"ladybug larve with aphids\" border=\"0\" alt=\"ladybug larve with aphids\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/wp-content\/mine\/2011\/05\/DSC02689_thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This picture makes me think of Star Wars, as if this were a giant tank surrounded by smaller machines. But that\u2019s the larva of a ladybug surrounded by aphids (plus drops of aphid milk).<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/wp-content\/mine\/2011\/05\/DSC09836.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"monkshood\" border=\"0\" alt=\"monkshood\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/wp-content\/mine\/2011\/05\/DSC09836_thumb.jpg\" width=\"137\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a>     <br \/>I love this photo for the shape and color and for the tiny \u2018berries\u2019 I didn\u2019t see at the time. This monkshood was one of many wild in a field in south-central <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mjhinton\/tags\/colorado\/\">Colorado<\/a>. It is so poisonous that gardeners have to wear gloves if they work with it.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/wp-content\/mine\/2011\/05\/DSC04757.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"cloisonne bug (junebug)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"cloisonne bug (junebug)\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/wp-content\/mine\/2011\/05\/DSC04757_thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a>     <br \/>Merri calls this junebug a cloisonn\u00e9 bug, an apt name, I think. Three or four of these graced a chamisa I\u2019ve passed almost daily for 10+ years. I only saw them that one day.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>I used a macro setting for all of these photos. However, you can use a zoom lens for an extreme close-up of a nearby subject.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/wp-content\/mine\/2011\/05\/DSC02900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"Macro of water droplets on pansy.\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Macro of water droplets on pansy.\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/wp-content\/mine\/2011\/05\/DSC02900_thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>     <br \/>You\u2019ll notice the depth of field problem with the out-of-focus edge of this pansy. I like the nearly spherical droplets.
