Bush<\/font>. That is more debt repaid more quickly than has ever been repaid by any nation at any time in history.\u201d [liar-idiot]<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/omb\/budget\/Historicals\">the opposite occurred<\/a>, with debt held by the public increasing from $3.5 trillion to nearly $6 trillion and gross federal debt going from $5.6 trillion to nearly $10 trillion. In fact, conservatives argued in 2001 that the very existence of a budget surplus was a valid reason <a href=\"http:\/\/yglesias.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/05\/the-forgotten-conservative-campaign-to-save-the-national-debt\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed:+matthewyglesias+%28Matthew+Yglesias%29\">to enact large, regressive tax cuts<\/a>.
