Recall, in Jan. 2009, hate radio host Rush Limbaugh expressed his <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/01\/20\/limbaugh-obama-fail\/\">hope that Obama fails<\/a>. One month later, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/02\/27\/mcconnell-cpac\/\">proudly embraced Limbaugh<\/a> at a conservative conference. The fringe rhetoric of far right activists had quickly <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/01\/30\/mccain-obama-limbaugh\/\">become<\/a> the de facto <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/01\/23\/obama-gop-limbaugh\/\">governing strategy<\/a> of the Republican leadership, as they adopted a posture of obstructionism.<\/p>\n<p>Believing that the Republican strategy of opposition has played to his political benefit, McConnell is pledging to do more of the same if Republicans win back the Senate. In an interview with the National Journal\u2019s Major Garrett, McConnell candidly acknowledged that he feels his \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/nationaljournal.com\/member\/magazine\/top-gop-priority-make-obama-a-one-term-president-20101023\">single most important<\/a>\u201d job is to defeat President Obama in 2012:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>MCCONNELL: We need to be honest with the public. This election is about them, not us. And we need to treat this election as the first step in retaking the government.
