Reps. <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/09\/10\/westmoreland-shut-down\/\">Lynn Westmoreland<\/a> (R-GA), <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/09\/20\/steve-king-shutdown-blood-oath\/\">Steve King<\/a> (R-IA), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2010-09-30\/house-republicans-plot-budget-strategy-to-scuttle-obama-s-health-overhaul.html\">Todd Tiahrt<\/a> (R-KS), and Alaska GOP Senate nominee <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/10\/08\/joe-miller-shutdown\/\">Joe Miller<\/a> have openly called for a shutdown, while Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/09\/30\/demint-govt-shutdown\/\">Jim DeMint<\/a> (R-SC) has given a tacit endorsement. Meanwhile, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was the architect of the first shutdown in 1995, has already <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/04\/09\/gingrich-shutdown-2-0\/\">devised a scheme<\/a> to repeat the failed tactic. <\/p>\n<p>However, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is apparently oblivious to the words of his own party\u2019s candidates, or intentionally trying to ignore them, as he said today on Fox News that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1ciY9kjHLQs&amp;feature=player_embedded\">he hadn\u2019t heard of<\/a> \u201cany candidates\u201d calling for a government shutdown.
