Picking up on former House Speaker Newt Gingrich\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/04\/09\/gingrich-shutdown-2-0\/\">two-tiered strategy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/09\/10\/republican-congressman-talks-government-shutdown\/\">many<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2008\/08\/13\/demint-on-possible-shutdown-i-think-people-will-say-%E2%80%98the-heck-with-government-we-need-energy%E2%80%99\/\">Republicans<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/09\/30\/steele-on-shutdown\/\">are<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/10\/08\/joe-miller-shutdown\/\">supporting<\/a> Gingrich\u2019s call to <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/04\/09\/gingrich-shutdown-2-0\/\">defund<\/a> \u201cevery radical bill passed by the [Democratic] machine,\u201d particularly the health care reform law. <\/p>\n<p>Government shutdown would seriously jeopardize aid to <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/09\/un-american----what-will-happen-if-republicans-force-a-government-shutdown.php\">vulnerable populations<\/a> like veterans, Social Security and Medicare recipients, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/09\/19\/AR2010091904982.html\">33 million Americans<\/a> in need of health insurance.
