As the Cranicks fled their home, their neighbors alerted the county\u2019s firefighters, who soon arrived at the scene. Yet when the firefighters arrived, they refused to put out the fire, saying that the family failed to pay the annual subscription fee to the fire department. Because the county\u2019s fire services for rural residences is based on household subscription fees, the firefighters, fully equipped to help the Cranicks, stood by and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpsdlocal6.com\/news\/local\/Firefighters-watch-as-home-burns-to-the-ground-104052668.html\">watched as the home burned to the ground<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won\u2019t respond, then watches it burn. That\u2019s exactly what happened to a local family tonight. A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. <strong>They wouldn\u2019t do anything to stop his house from burning. Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay. The mayor said if homeowners don\u2019t pay, they\u2019re out of luck.<\/strong> [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>We asked the mayor of South Fulton if the chief could have made an exception. \u201cAnybody that\u2019s not in the city of South Fulton, it\u2019s a service we offer, either they accept it or they don\u2019t,\u201d Mayor David Crocker said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The fire reportedly continued for hours \u201cbecause garden hoses just wouldn\u2019t put it out. It wasn\u2019t until that <a href=\"http:\/\/krmg.com\/blogs\/the_krmg_morning_news_blog\/2010\/10\/krmg-morning-news-stack-of-stu-214.html\">fire spread to a neighbor\u2019s property<\/a>, that anyone would respond\u201d \u2014 only because the neighbor had paid the fee.<\/p>\n<p>A local newspaper further pressed Mayor Crocker about the city\u2019s policy, which has been in place since 1990. <font style=\"background-color: #ffff00\">Crocker, a Republican who was elected in 2008 and serves with a county commission where <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.obiongop.com\/?page_id=85\"><font style=\"background-color: #ffff00\">every seat<\/font><\/a><font style=\"background-color: #ffff00\"> is also filled by a Republican, likened the policy to buying auto insurance.<\/font> <em>[mjh: Except that the police don\u2019t let you die trapped in your car because you don\u2019t have auto insurance &#8211; yet.] <\/em>The paper said he told them that, after all, \u201cif an auto owner allowed their vehicle insurance to lapse, they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwtntoday.com\/news.php?viewStory=46801\">would not expect<\/a> an insurance company to pay for an unprotected vehicle after it was wrecked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, in the county commission\u2019s latest report on its fire services, which outlines which parts of the municipal area will receive fire services only through subscriptions, <font style=\"background-color: #ffff00\">the commissioners and fire service officials brag that the county is \u201c<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/favicon.ico\" \/><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?url=http:\/\/troy.troytn.com\/Obion%20County%20Fire%20Department%20Presentation%20Presented%20to%20the%20County%20Commission.pdf\"><font style=\"background-color: #ffff00\">very progressive<\/font><\/a><font style=\"background-color: #ffff00\">.\u201d<\/font> <em>[mjh: Double-plus good newspeak!]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/10\/04\/county-firefighters-subscription\/\">Think Progress \u00bb Tennessee County\u2019s Subscription-Based Firefighters Watch As Family Home Burns Down<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Think Progress \u00bb Tennessee County\u2019s Subscription-Based Firefighters Watch As Family Home Burns Down [In Obion County, Tennessee], Gene Cranick\u2019s home caught on fire.
