{"id":3399,"date":"2010-09-23T14:43:35","date_gmt":"2010-09-23T20:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/nada\/the-contract-on-america-renewed\/"},"modified":"2010-09-23T20:26:52","modified_gmt":"2010-09-24T02:26:52","slug":"the-contract-on-america-renewed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/nada\/the-contract-on-america-renewed\/","title":{"rendered":"The Contract on America Renewed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They gotta get this Pledge to fit on a baseball cap if they really want to reach Joe the Plumber.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/09\/23\/gop-tenther\/\">Think Progress \u00bb GOP \u2018Pledge\u2019 Embraces Radical \u2018Tenther\u2019 View of Constitution<\/a> <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Today\u2019s release of the Republican \u201cPledge to America,\u201d however, eliminates any doubt regarding the GOP\u2019s stance on tentherism.&#160; As two passages from the Pledge make clear, the constitutional lunatics are now in charge of the GOP\u2019s asylum.&#160; The first passage is a pledge to read the Constitution as a tenther document:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We pledge to honor the Constitution <strong>as constructed by its framers and honor the original intent of those precepts that have been consistently ignored \u2013 particularly the Tenth Amendment<\/strong>, which grants that all powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This notion that the framers had some special understanding of the Tenth Amendment which is being \u201cconsistently ignored\u201d is classic tentherism.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/09\/23\/gop-tenther\/\">Think Progress \u00bb GOP \u2018Pledge\u2019 Embraces Radical \u2018Tenther\u2019 View of Constitution<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here, I don\u2019t just tip my hat, I doff it and say \u2018bravo\u2019 to Garrett:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dangerousmeta.com\/site\/bbc_news_house_republicans_unveil_campaign_pledge_to_america\/\">dangerousmeta!<\/a> <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-11394612\">An arrogant and out-of-touch government of self-appointed elites makes decisions, issues mandates, and enacts laws without accepting or requesting the input of the many.<\/a>\u201d Are they talking about Congress during the Bush years?&#160; If they\u2019re apologizing, I\u2019m listening.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dangerousmeta.com\/site\/bbc_news_house_republicans_unveil_campaign_pledge_to_america\/\">dangerousmeta!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/09\/23\/gop-pledge-earmarks\/\">Think Progress \u00bb GOP\u2019s Lobbyist-Authored \u2018Pledge To America\u2019 Drops Prior Pledge To Impose Earmarks Moratorium<\/a> <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As the Huffington Post\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/09\/22\/pledge-for-america-brian-wild-lobbyist_n_735911.html\">Sam Stein reports<\/a>, the GOP\u2019s new \u201cPledge to America\u201d was directed by a staffer named Brian Wild, who until early this year, was a lobbyist at a prominent DC firm that lobbied on behalf of corporate giants like Exxon. Moreover, the insurance industry is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/industries.php?cycle=2010&amp;cid=N00028152&amp;type=I\">leading contributor<\/a> to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the Republican who led the effort. <font style=\"background-color: #dd8484\">Consistent with its desire to placate lobbyists, the 21-page \u201cPledge\u201d omits any mention of a key Republican mantra: a ban on earmarks.<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/09\/23\/gop-pledge-earmarks\/\">Think Progress \u00bb GOP\u2019s Lobbyist-Authored \u2018Pledge To America\u2019 Drops Prior Pledge To Impose Earmarks Moratorium<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/09\/23\/AR2010092304742.html?nav=rss_opinion\/columns\">Eugene Robinson &#8211; The GOP&#8217;s Hooey to America<\/a> <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>By <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.washingtonpost.com\/staff\/articles\/eugene+robinson\/\">Eugene Robinson<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Friday, September 24, 2010 <\/p>\n<p>The Republicans were doing pretty well as the Party of No. So why did they decide to rebrand themselves as the Party of Nonsense? <\/p>\n<p>All right, I&#8217;m being slightly disingenuous. Inquiring minds demanded to know just what the GOP proposed to do if voters entrusted it with control of one or both houses of Congress. But if the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/09\/22\/AR2010092206643.html\">&quot;Pledge to America&quot; unveiled Thursday<\/a> is the best that House Republicans can come up with, they&#8217;d have been better off continuing to froth and foam about &quot;creeping socialism&quot; while stonewalling on specifics. <\/p>\n<p>The problem with the pledge is that the numbers don&#8217;t remotely add up. The <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/favicon.ico\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?url=http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/politics\/documents\/GOP_pledge_09222010.pdf\">document<\/a> is such a jumble of contradictions that it&#8217;s hard to imagine how it could possibly pass muster with anyone who survived eighth-grade arithmetic &#8212; unless, perhaps, the Republicans have something in mind that they&#8217;re not prepared to talk about quite yet. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/09\/23\/AR2010092304742.html?nav=rss_opinion\/columns\">Eugene Robinson &#8211; The GOP&#8217;s Hooey to America<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They gotta get this Pledge to fit on a baseball cap if they really want to reach Joe the Plumber.
