Nearly 85 percent of tea party supporters say \u201cthe views of the people involved in the tea party movement generally reflect the views of most Americans,\u201d while only 25 percent of the general public agrees.<\/p>\n<p>The Times also created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2010\/04\/14\/us\/politics\/20100414-tea-party-poll-graphic.html?\">great series of infographics<\/a> about the poll.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/51720\/tea-partiers-more-likely-to-think-violent-action-against-the-government-is-justified\">Tea partiers more likely to think \u201cviolent action\u201d against the government is \u201cjustified\u201d \u00ab New Mexico Independent<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Update added 4\/15 9:30pm<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracyfornewmexico.com\/democracy_for_new_mexico\/2010\/04\/fact-check-the-truth-about-tax-freedom-day-by-gerry-bradley.html\">Another Tax-Time Myth<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s another whopper popular out there on FOX News, right-wing talk radio, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/opinion\/editorials\/152223555428opinioneditorials04-15-10.htm\"><em>Albuquerque Journal<\/em><\/a>. It goes like this: <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know that 47 percent of all taxpayers \u2013 almost half \u2013 pay no federal income tax? Why should half of America be supporting the other half? It\u2019s not fair\u201d <\/p>\n<p>As a well-researched piece in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/14\/business\/economy\/14leonhardt.html?emc=eta1\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> points out, this whopper ignores the inconvenient truth that income taxes are not\u2014by a long stretch &#8212; the only federal taxes people pay. When you look at the whole picture &#8212; which includes payroll taxes like Social Security and Medicare &#8212; you get a very different number. According to the CBO, only about 10 percent of all households, at most, pay no net federal taxes. That\u2019s a significantly less outrageous number, so you won\u2019t hear it on FOX news. <\/p>\n<p><a In other words, we would be a Third World country.<\/p>\n<p>Despite our enduring mythology of Americans as \u201crugged individuals,\u201d this country was not built by individuals acting alone. Certainly, many very talented and enterprising individuals made significant contributions.
