How did one of our great political parties become so ruthless, so willing to embrace scorched-earth tactics even if so doing undermines the ability of any future administration to govern?<\/p>\n

The key point is that ever since the Reagan years, the Republican Party has been dominated by radicals \u2014 ideologues and\/or apparatchiks who, at a fundamental level, do not accept anyone else\u2019s right to govern.<\/p>\n

Anyone surprised by the venomous, over-the-top opposition to Mr. Obama must have forgotten the Clinton years. Remember when Rush Limbaugh suggested that Hillary Clinton was a party to murder? When Newt Gingrich shut down the federal government in an attempt to bully Bill Clinton into accepting those Medicare cuts? And let\u2019s not even talk about the impeachment saga.<\/p>\n

The only difference now is that the G.O.P. is in a weaker position, having lost control not just of Congress but, to a large extent, of the terms of debate. The public no longer buys conservative ideology the way it used to; the old attacks on Big Government and paeans to the magic of the marketplace have lost their resonance. Yet conservatives retain their belief that they, and only they, should govern.<\/p>\n

The result has been a cynical, ends-justify-the-means approach. Hastening the day when the rightful governing party returns to power is all that matters, so the G.O.P. will seize any club at hand with which to beat the current administration.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an ugly picture. But it\u2019s the truth. And it\u2019s a truth anyone trying to find solutions to America\u2019s real problems has to understand.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Brazil, Spain, and Japan \u2014 the other three 2016 finalists \u2014 all sent their country\u2019s leaders to Copenhagen, as MSNBC\u2019s Rachel Maddow pointed out on NBC\u2019s Meet the Press today. Conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks said that he was proud Obama had \u201cput his country ahead of his own personal prestige\u201d:<\/p>\n

MADDOW: In 2012, London got the Olympics after Blair tried for them. In 2014, Russia got them after Putin tried for them, and in 2016, all four finalists sent their head of government or head of state to make the argument. Obama did nothing unreasonable, and it would have been a shock if Chicago won. For them to be cheering America\u2019s loss here on the right, I think is sort of disgusting.<\/strong> […]<\/p>\n

BROOKS: Nonetheless, I have to say, I\u2019m with Obama on this. He took a risk, he comes away somewhat humiliated, but he took a risk for his town, he took a risk for his country, he put his country ahead of his own personal prestige, and he lost one. I actually don\u2019t mind it. I think he was all right on this.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

E.J. Dionne added that Sen. John McCain\u2019s (R-AZ) presidential slogan was \u201cCountry First,\u201d but \u201cin this case, it was Obama-hatred first on the right, not the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

BACHMANN: We have to defund the left. And this is great. Gallup came out with a poll, I think last week or the week before, that said the American people believe that Congress wastes 50 percent \u2014 50 cents or 50 percent of every dollar it spends. God love the American people. They get it. They understand the truth that actually there\u2019s huge waste. So we defund that but then the third thing that we do, which you\u2019re getting into with economic development, is we have to after we defund the left, we pass repealer bill after repealer bill after repealler bill. Because there\u2019s a huge machinery that\u2019s been built up in this town. And we have to just repeal it.<\/strong> And we have to campaign on that to the American people. That is a hugely winning message right now with the American people.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Bachmann isn\u2019t the first conservative member of Congress to express a desire to \u201crepeal\u201d legislation passed under Obama if Republicans take back control of Congress again. In August, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) said \u201cwe\u2019ll repeal<\/a>\u201d health care reform if it passes. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) said at the Values Voter Summit last month that he dreams of telling President Obama in 2010, \u201cwe need to repeal<\/a> the disaster and the tyranny that you passed last session.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
