Recently, someone asked me if I had written a book. \u201cWhy, yes,\u201d I replied with enough pride to beg the Universe to push me down, \u201cFour, in fact<\/a>.\u201d \u201cWas one a book about your experiences in the Sixties?\u201d Sigh.<\/p>\n

This was not the first nor worst time I\u2019ve been mistaken for Mark Rudd, Sixties Radical and math teacher. My name is Mark and I\u2019m married to Merri Rudd, so this mistake has come up many times. That surprises me, in part, because I wouldn\u2019t expect the wife of a Sixties Radical to take his name.<\/p>\n

I think the worst such experience occurred at a party. I was introduced to a doctor as, \u201cMerri\u2019s husband, Mark.\u201d \u201cOh,\u201d he exclaimed, \u201cI\u2019ve been wanting to meet you for so long.\u201d I beamed. \u201cTell me about the Weather Underground.\u201d I stopped beaming. (As Wikipedia will tell youngsters, this is not the service that reports weather information but a domestic terrorism organization.)<\/p>\n

The funniest of these mix-ups involved a phone call I received at home one night twenty years ago. \u201cHi, this is Mark,\u201d I said, as I did when I used to answer the phone. \u201cMark! I\u2019m with Columbia University. We\u2019re interviewing people about their experiences in the Sixties. Do you have a minute?\u201d \u201cSure,\u201d I replied. Hell, I remember the Sixties. I don\u2019t remember how long into the conversation the caller asked, \u201cAre you Mark Rudd?<\/em>\u201d \u201cUh, no.\u201d Click. Sigh.<\/p>\n

Can you imagine what it is like to disappoint<\/em> people when they find out you\u2019re not who they expected? I just hope someday, someone says to the Mark Rudd, \u201cI really like your book on digital photography.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
