{"id":2664,"date":"2008-10-12T15:15:43","date_gmt":"2008-10-12T21:15:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/election\/rolling-stone-on-maverick-mccain\/"},"modified":"2008-10-12T15:15:43","modified_gmt":"2008-10-12T21:15:43","slug":"rolling-stone-on-maverick-mccain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/election\/rolling-stone-on-maverick-mccain\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolling Stone on Maverick McCain"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>McCain Camp Ignores Questions About Candidate\u2019s Military Record <\/h3>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cqpolitics.com\/wmspage.cfm?parmA1=5&amp;docID=hsnews-000002974001#\">By Jeff Stein, CQ Staff<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>Evidently taking a page from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cqpolitics.com\/wmspage.cfm?docID=profile-000000000225\">John Kerry<\/a> \u2019s quest for the presidency in 2004, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cqpolitics.com\/wmspage.cfm?docID=profile-000000000026\">John McCain<\/a> \u2019s campaign has decided \u2014 for now, anyway \u2014 not to respond to provocative attacks aimed squarely at his strong point: his reputation as a military hero. <\/p>\n<p>The much talked about main broadside came in the form of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/news\/coverstory\/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain\">12,000-word attack<\/a> in Rolling Stone (\u201cMake Believe Maverick,\u201d by Tim Dickinson), which portrayed the hard-partying young McCain as a reckless pilot who totaled three jets, and whose career as a pilot was saved only by the pull of his father, commander of the U.S. Navy\u2019s Pacific Fleet during the Vietnam War. <\/p>\n<p>The piece, which Rolling Stone says has garnered 2.5 million hits on the magazine\u2019s Web site since Oct. 6, has been the talk of the liberal blogosphere, but gotten zero attention from the mainstream media. \u2026 <\/p>\n<p>The Rolling Stone piece \u2026 calls into question McCain\u2019s military legend. \u2026 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI doubt it will have much of an impact.,\u201d says New York Times media columnist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/ref\/business\/bio-carr.html\">David Carr<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a vertical axis of information in conservative circles that the swift boat moved on that is not replicated by liberals,\u201d Carr said <strong>\u201cThe conservative talk radio shows have an ability to metastasize and amplify negative stories, and they won\u2019t be punching in on this one.\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Washington Post blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/discussion\/2008\/10\/05\/DI2008100502683.html\">Dan Froomkin<\/a>, a frequent Bush critic, agreed. <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOne enormous difference compared to Kerry, in my mind, is that the [mainstream media], with the exception of the <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/politics\/la-na-aviator6-2008oct06,0,7633315.story\"><strong>LA Times<\/strong><\/a><strong>, has refused to pick up any elements of this story, whereas it served (wittingly and unwittingly) as a massive echo chamber for the Swift boating,\u201d according to Froomkin.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McCain Camp Ignores Questions About Candidate\u2019s Military Record By Jeff Stein, CQ Staff Evidently taking a page from John Kerry \u2019s quest for the presidency in 2004, John McCain \u2019s campaign has decided \u2014 for now, anyway \u2014 not to respond to provocative attacks aimed squarely at his strong point: his reputation as a military &hellip;
