Joe Lieberman (I-CT) explained that he was <a href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2007\/12\/17\/the-mccain-lieberman-show\/\">supporting<\/a><br \/>\nSen. John McCain (R-AZ) for president because he believes that<br \/>\nwithdrawal from Iraq would \u201cabandon\u201d the country \u201cto the killers\u201d and<br \/>\n\u201cempower them to come after us again.\u201d \u201cMcCain will never let that<br \/>\nhappen,\u201d claimed Lieberman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guy has been almost always right on the big issues of foreign<br \/>\npolicy over the last twenty years,\u201d said Lieberman. \u201cThat\u2019s why I want<br \/>\nhim to be my president,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n        <script type=\"text\/javascript\">\n            var flvLiebermanMcCainForeign3204019615 = new SWFObject('\/wp-content\/plugins\/flvplayer.swf?file=http:\/\/video.thinkprogress.org\/2008\/02\/LiebermanMcCainForeign.320.40.flv&amp;autoStart=false', 'em-flvLiebermanMcCainForeign3204019615', '320', '60', '6', '#ffffff');\n            flvLiebermanMcCainForeign3204019615.addParam('quality', 'high');\n            flvLiebermanMcCainForeign3204019615.addParam('wmode', 'transparent');\n            flvLiebermanMcCainForeign3204019615.write('flvLiebermanMcCainForeign3204019615');\n        <\/script><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lieberman is now claiming that McCain has a nearly spotless foreign<br \/>\npolicy record, but in reality, McCain was an ardent supporter of the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2006\/12\/06\/gore-iraq-bush\/\">worst strategic mistake<\/a><br \/>\nin the history of the United States.\u201d In fact, McCain was one of the<br \/>\nmost prominent voices telling the American people that Iraq would be<br \/>\n\u201ceasy\u201d and that Americans would be \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=h-a5T0HsJpw\">welcomed as liberators<\/a>\u201c:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAnd I believe that the <strong>success will be fairly easy<\/strong>.\u201d [CNN, Larry King Live, 9\/24\/02]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that we can win <strong>an overwhelming victory in a very short period of time<\/strong>.\u201d [CNN Late Edition, 9\/29\/02]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you believe that the people of Iraq or at least a large number of them will treat us as liberators?\u201d \u201c<strong>Absolutely. Absolutely<\/strong>,\u201d replied McCain. [MSNBC, Hardball, 3\/12\/03]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt in my mind that once these people are gone that <strong>we will be welcomed as liberators<\/strong>.\u201d [MSNBC, Hardball, 3\/24\/03]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the same segment, Lieberman stressed that \u201cyou\u2019ve got to take<br \/>\npeople at their word.\u201d Unfortunately, too many Americans did take John<br \/>\nMcCain at his word when he said Iraq would be \u201ceasy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2008\/02\/15\/lieberman-waterboarding\/\">Think Progress \u00bb Lieberman Defends Waterboarding: It\u2019s \u2018Not Like Putting Burning Coals On People\u2019s Bodies\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/mine\/2008\/02\/mcccainli.jpg\" \/>\u201cIt is not like putting burning coals on people\u2019s bodies. The person is in no real danger. The impact is psychological,\u201d<\/strong> Lieberman said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lieberman appears to be mimicking his close friend Sen. John McCain\u2019s (R-AZ) <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2008\/02\/14\/mccain-pander\/\">pandering to the right wing<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">.<\/span> Like Lieberman, McCain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_lists\/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&amp;session=2&amp;vote=00022\">voted against<\/a> banning waterboarding this week, even though he had previously called the technique \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/24\/washington\/24mukasey.html\">very exquisite torture<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Until recently, Lieberman had also raised objections to the Bush administration\u2019s interrogation practices&#8230;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Think Progress \u00bb Lieberman: McCain \u2018Almost Always Right On The Big Issues Of Foreign Policy Over The Last 20 Years\u2019 On the 2\/12 edition of Bill Bennett\u2019s radio show, Sen.
