What they didn&#8217;t know was that <strong>their meeting had come to the attention of the U.S. military<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A secret <\/p>\n<p>400-page Defense Department document obtained by NBC News <strong>lists the Lake Worth meeting as a \u201cthreat\u201d<\/strong> and one of more <\/p>\n<p>than 1,500 \u201csuspicious incidents\u201d across the country over a recent 10-month period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis peaceful, educationally oriented group <\/p>\n<p>being a threat is incredible,\u201d says Evy Grachow, a member of the Florida group called The Truth Project. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The DOD database <\/p>\n<p>obtained by NBC News <strong>includes nearly four dozen anti-war meetings or protests<\/strong>, including some that have taken place far <\/p>\n<p>from any military installation, post or recruitment center. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Other documents obtained by NBC News show that <strong>the Defense <\/p>\n<p>Department is clearly increasing its domestic monitoring activities<\/strong>. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: larger; background-\n\ncolor: yellow; color: blue\">\u201cI think Americans should be concerned that the military, in fact, has reached too far,\u201d<\/strong> says NBC <\/p>\n<p>News military analyst Bill Arkin. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means that they\u2019re actually collecting information about who\u2019s at those protests, the <\/p>\n<p>descriptions of vehicles at those protests,\u201d says Arkin. \u201cOn the domestic level, this is unprecedented,\u201d he says. \u201cI think it&#8217;s the <\/p>\n<p>beginning of enormous problems and enormous mischief for the military.\u201d &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Counterintelligence Field Activity (CIFA) is becoming <\/p>\n<p><strong>the superpower of data mining within the U.S.<\/strong> national security community. Its \u201coperational and analytical records\u201d <\/p>\n<p>include \u201creports of investigation, collection reports, statements of individuals, affidavits, correspondence, and other documentation <\/p>\n<p>pertaining to investigative or analytical efforts\u201d by the DOD and other U.S. government agencies to identify terrorist and other threats. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Since March 2004, CIFA has awarded at least $33 million in contracts to corporate giants Lockheed Martin, Unisys <\/p>\n<p>Corporation, Computer Sciences Corporation and Northrop Grumman<\/strong> to develop databases that comb through classified and <\/p>\n<p>unclassified government data, commercial information and Internet chatter to help sniff out terrorists, saboteurs and spies. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Bert Tussing, director of Homeland Defense and Security Issues at the U.S. Army War College and a former Marine, says <strong>\u201cthere is <\/p>\n<p>very little that could justify the collection of domestic intelligence by the Unites States military. If we start going down this <\/p>\n<p>slippery slope it would be too easy to go back to a place we never want to see again,\u201d<\/strong> he says.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the targets of <\/p>\n<p>the U.S. military\u2019s recent collection efforts say they have already gone too far.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: larger; background-\n\ncolor: yellow; color: blue\">\u201cIt&#8217;s absolute paranoia \u2014 at the highest levels of our government,\u201d<\/strong> says Hersh of The Truth <\/p>\n<p>Project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, we&#8217;re based here at the Quaker Meeting House,\u201d says Truth Project member Marie Zwicker, \u201cand several of us are <\/p>\n<p>Quakers.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You&#8217;re not actually surprised that domestic spying will prove extremely profitable to a few large corporations, are you? mjh Is the Pentagon spying on Americans?
