Time to re-read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.rice.edu\/~ssiyer\/minstrels\/poems\/1096.html\"><em>On Turning Ten<\/em><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stpetershigh.org.uk\/DEPARTMENTS\/ENGLISH_DEPT\/PRUSH\/KS4_Resources\/Billy_Collins_project.html\"><em>The Country<\/em><\/a> (bottom of that page). Collins is one of my favorite poets &#8212; perhaps he and Frost share #2 and there is no #1 for me (though I could hardly imagine poets more different than Frost and Collins). <\/p>\n<p>Time to trot out my tribute to Collins:<\/p>\n<p>Billy<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t seem the least bit odd<br \/>\nthat all the members of the orchestra<br \/>\nare dogs.<br \/>\nSome in tuxedos,<br \/>\nsome in black gowns,<br \/>\nsitting, waiting &#8212; good dogs! &#8212;<br \/>\nfor the conductor<br \/>\nto raise a long meaty bone.<br \/>\nSome clear their throats,<br \/>\nsome drool,<br \/>\nnone look away for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t seem the least bit odd<br \/>\nthat everyone in the audience<br \/>\nis in a tutu.<br \/>\nMen and women dressed for the<br \/>\nballet, though this is a concert,<br \/>\neach holding a pen and pad<br \/>\nplanning to pounce<br \/>\nto snatch some new idea.<br \/>\nAs if Beethoven for Dogs<br \/>\nweren&#8217;t enough.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t seem the least bit odd<br \/>\nin the end<br \/>\nwhen the conductor puts down his baton,<br \/>\nmost of the meat shaken off<br \/>\nto the delight of the First Chair.<br \/>\nHe turns and bows<br \/>\nand then I recognize him:<br \/>\nthe poet laureate,<br \/>\nthe old dog himself. <span class=\"sig\">mjh<\/span><\/p>\n<p>8\/13\/02<\/p>\n<p>PS: The WA <a href=\"http:\/\/writersalmanac.publicradio.org\/programs\/2007\/03\/19\/#thursday\">includes a quote from Collins<\/a> mentioning sex. I can&#8217;t think of any poem by Collins about sex.
