We planted this mimosa
\nwhen I turned 50.
\nMom always said,
\n“every man should plant a tree
\nand raise a son.”<\/p>\n
I’ve planted many trees
\nand this one started out
\njust right
\nthe mantis in the branches
\nsaying a benediction<\/p>\n
But life has its own way
\nof moving forward
\nthat sturdy little tree
\nseemed dead in spring
\nour hopes dashed
\nuntil new growth sprang up
\nfrom still lively roots
\ngrowing its own way
\naround and past the dead<\/p>\n
