If you actually know what&#8217;s going on, you&#8217;re less likely to support ID. <\/p>\n<p>With 60% of Republicans in NM supporting ID, it&#8217;s no surprise you don&#8217;t hear much talk lately about them being the party of &#8220;deep <\/p>\n<p>thinkers&#8221; (as they called themselves just a few years ago). <span class=\"sig\">mjh<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img src='http:\/\/mjhinton.net\/mjh\/graphics\/IDpoll.gif' alt='NM ID poll' \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/405614nm11-06-05.htm\">ABQjournal: Intelligent Design Has Support<\/a> BY JOHN FLECK, Journal <\/p>\n<p>Staff Writer<br \/>\nBut poll suggests many don\u2019t know much about issue<br \/>\nCopyright \u00a9 2005 Albuquerque Journal<\/p>\n<p>The idea of teaching <\/p>\n<p>\u201cintelligent design\u201d in New Mexico public school science classes has more support than opposition among the state\u2019s registered voters, <\/p>\n<p>according to a Journal poll.<\/p>\n<p>    But the support falls just short of a majority, and the poll also suggests that a lot of New <\/p>\n<p>Mexicans don\u2019t know much about the issue one way or another. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>53 percent said they had heard or read about intelligent design, <\/p>\n<p>compared with <strong>43 percent who said they had not<\/strong>. (The remainder didn\u2019t know or wouldn\u2019t say.) &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Intelligent <\/p>\n<p>design opponent Marshall Berman, education director of the New Mexico Academy of Science, said he believes the willingness to allow <\/p>\n<p>teaching of intelligent design alongside evolution was <strong>likely a result of \u201cthe American concept of fairness.\u201d<\/strong> [mjh: what <\/p>\n<p>a sweet and gracious thought.]<\/p>\n<p>    He said those people did not understand that intelligent design is not scientific and that, in <\/p>\n<p>his view, belief in intelligent design tends to be equated with belief in a creator in contemporary society. <\/p>\n<p>Pollster Brian <\/p>\n<p>Sanderoff, whose Research and Polling Inc. conducted the survey, noted that <strong>support for teaching intelligent design in school was <\/p>\n<p>lower among those who had already heard or read about the subject<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>    <strong>Among those who were already aware of the <\/p>\n<p>issue, 48 percent opposed teaching it in school, compared with 46 percent in support.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>    Sanderoff also noted that the <\/p>\n<p>more educated people were, the less likely they were to support teaching intelligent design in school. Among political parties, Democrats <\/p>\n<p>were evenly split on the issue, with 44 percent supporting teaching intelligent design in school and 45 percent opposed. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Republicans strongly supported teaching intelligent design in schools, 60 percent to 32 percent.<\/strong> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note, in particular, how many people in this survey knew nothing about ID before the survey.
