{"id":1111,"date":"2004-02-17T11:03:17","date_gmt":"2004-02-17T18:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/uncategorized\/ashcrofts-injustice\/"},"modified":"2004-02-17T11:03:17","modified_gmt":"2004-02-17T18:03:17","slug":"ashcrofts-injustice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edgewiseblog.com\/mjh\/nada\/dump-duhbya\/ashcrofts-injustice\/","title":{"rendered":"Ashcroft&#8217;s Injustice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"USATODAY.com - Prosecutor in terror case controversy sues Ashcroft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/washington\/2004-02-17-ashcroft-sued_x.htm\">USATODAY.com &#8211; Prosecutor in terror case controversy sues Ashcroft<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A federal prosecutor in a major terrorism case in Detroit has taken the rare step of <b>suing Attorney General John Ashcroft<\/b>, alleging <b>the Justice Department interfered<\/b> with the case, compromised a confidential informant and exaggerated results in the war on terrorism. <\/p>\n<p>Assistant U.S. Attorney <a title=\"Richard Convertino\" href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news?q=%22Richard Convertino%22&amp;num=100&amp;hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;safe=off&amp;scoring=d\">Richard Convertino<\/a> of Detroit <b>accused the Justice Department of &#8221;gross mismanagement&#8221; of the war on terrorism<\/b> in a whistleblower lawsuit filed late Friday in federal court in Washington. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Convertino came under internal investigation last fall <b>after providing information to a Senate committee about his concerns about the war on terror<\/b>. His testimony came just months after he helped convict some members of an alleged terrorism cell in Detroit. <\/p>\n<p><b>The government now admits it failed to turn over evidence during the trial<\/b> that might have assisted the defense, including an allegation from an imprisoned drug gang leader who claimed the government&#8217;s key witness made up his story. <\/p>\n<p>Convertino is seeking damages under the First Amendment and Privacy Act, alleging <b>he has been subjected to an internal investigation as retaliation for his cooperation with the Senate<\/b> and that information from the internal probe was wrongly leaked to news media. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Convertino also <b>accused Justice officials of intentionally divulging the name of one of his confidential terrorism informants (CI) to <i>retaliate<\/i> against him<\/b>. [mjh: just like the CIA agent the Bush team outted]<\/p>\n<p><b>The leak put the informant at grave risk<\/b>, forced him to flee the United States and &#8220;<b>interfered with the ability of the United States to obtain information from the CI about current and <i>future terrorist activities<\/i><\/b>,&#8221; the suit alleges. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Convertino is a federal prosecutor, probably not some wimpy liberal unpatriot. Note the &#8221;Justice&#8221; Department broke the law, then attacked one of its own for talking to Congress.
