I’ve been reluctant to follow the herd on this, but ‘selfie’ is very convenient, and that usually wins me over. Even the masturbatory undertone is fitting, metaphorically. Ours is the Age of the Self, as any blogger proves.
Perhaps surprising to some, the term was first recorded in Australia, not the U.S. or Britain, in 2002. An abashed and probably hungover participant in an Internet forum posted a self-portrait taken after a drunken accident on a set of stairs.
“I had a hole … right through my bottom lip,” the post said. “And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.”
As usual, Quigley does a great job of explaining a complex topic. I’m still less than thrilled to go from $95/month to over $300, based on my hope and assumption that I won’t need the expanded coverage (yet).
Before we all rush to man the barricades, though, remember these are the same health plans that precipitated a different kind of outrage a few years ago when companies like Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico and Presbyterian Healthcare Services proposed completely justifiable 20-plus percent premium increases.
I should also point out that owners of these plans periodically call the Journal to complain that they just found out their pregnancies, their cancers or their bum knees are not covered, and they now face horrendous medical bills.
You still have a chance to see great art and artists. I recommend you look for Susan Weeks (watercolors), Susan Klebanoff (amazing woven hangings — best in show), Karen Carlson (leather handbags), and Jeremy Stein (photography), in particular. Lots to see.
Be sure to visit the children’s wing for rescued birds and a variety of dogs available for adoption (ask for Buddy — he’s a sweetheart and a great medium size). You could save a dog’s life and it would more than repay you for that.
I called him Dimdahl(countless times) and he made my blood boil. I’m sure that at one time I looked forward to dancing on his grave. That dies with him. He was a classic New Mexican, large and full of contrasts, loved by some and despised by others but ignored by no one.
