Science indicates that venting frustration or anger doesn’t really help…

… but I’m a blogger. You may know today is the deadline for obtaining health insurance through Healthcare. gov and its local tentacles. I’ll spare you most of the details but here are a few observations:

Comparing available plans works fairly well. What’s unclear is why one provider (say, BlueCross) has more than one Silver plan (Community vs Advantage; Pres has Bronze A, B, C, and D). On close inspection, it appears one pays more for Advantage without any increase in benefits. Can that be true?

One can go directly to an insurer, bypassing the central sites. Blue Cross does not list the cheaper “Community” plans on their website, therefore you pay more to go directly to BCBS. WTF?

Insurance is still ridiculously complex: deductibles, co-pay vs co-insurance, out-of-pocket, in or out of network, HMO vs PPO (really? still?).

All of this I blame on the Insurance Industry. But, now on to healthcare.gov.

Can you imagine if you got “we’re too busy” or “page not found” on Amazon? NEVER.

In setting up an account, you are told SSN is optional. SSN is NOT optional. For example, a friend skipped SSN and was “successful” in buying coverage from BCBS. But BCBS uses SSN for records. She’s still having trouble getting them to acknowledge payment, though eventually she got a card from them.

You CANNOT enter your SSN after the setup of an account. I left out SSN, got all the way to the end, got “confirmation” of insurance with a note that I had to verify my citizenship. At that point, there is no option to enter an SSN. There is an option to upload one’s passport but no indication of acceptable format — it just hangs for me.

I saw one opportunity to Pay Now for my first premium. When I selected that button, my browser blocked the pop-up. When I told my browser to allow popups from healthcare.gov, it reloaded the page and the button was gone.

I have documentation indicating that my initial application was successful but that I need to prove I’m a citizen and make a payment, neither of which I can do. So, do I have insurance?

Happy New Year!

To me, the winter solstice is New Year’s eve, the true transition from old to new. The solstices are as old as the earth itself, much older than the oceans, the atmosphere, the continents as we know them, or life. Only sunrise and sunset are older, yet deeply entwined with the solstice, wheels within wheels. This is the heartbeat of our home, slow, steady, and strong, beating a binary tattoo along the analog path of the earth around the sun. Lub-dub.

Stand Still

I recommend you re-read all of Andrew Marvell’s To His Coy Mistress, but I will jump to the punchline here. peace, mjh

Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Through the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

Myth, religion, and the long con

Yes, the “controversy” over Santa’s race is absurd. (Spoiler: He doesn’t exist.) However, it brings us to the edge of an important awareness: all belief systems depend on keeping people in line and obedient. Someone tells you “the truth” and that you will suffer if you don’t believe their “truth.” It’s all nonsense. Believe what you will. Happy Solstice!

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In Atlanta, children of many races share their Christmas wish lists with a black Santa Claus.

In Houston, Santa dons a red zoot suit and dances to jazz as he hands out gifts in Mexican-American neighborhoods.

In Indian Country, Native American Santas add American Indian attire to their red snowsuits….

More of the death rattle of Conservatism

Is conservatism cutting its own throat in religion as well as politics or is religion becoming as irrelevant as conservatism? Only the zeitgeist knows.

PHILADELPHIA – The United Methodist church defrocked a pastor from central Pennsylvania on Thursday for violating doctrine by officiating his son’s gay marriage, leaving the minister shocked and upset that he could be punished for an “act of love.”

Not everyone involved in the Santa Fe debate over gay marriage was happy Thursday.

J.D. Vasquez, who helped lead religious-based opposition to the City Council resolution, provided this statement Thursday:

“In upholding the rights of a small, well-funded and well-organized minority, the New Mexico Supreme Court has denied the ‘right of conscience’ to innumerable New Mexicans who disagree with same-sex ‘marriage.’

“We continue to see an eradication of the rights of Christians seeking to live Christian lives.

“Marriage, which follows natural law, establishes family solidity, provides the best environment for raising children and guarantees the next generation. Its delegitimization by redefinition guarantees none of those things.”

Governor Martinez is wrong

First, opponents of marriage equality are on the wrong side of history and increasingly irrelevant (hurts, doesn’t it). Second, the People don’t get to vote to *remove* rights. If we do have such power, then I hearby start a drive to outlaw all guns — ain’t gonna happen, no matter how great it would be.

Gov. Martinez, a Republican, has voiced opposition to same-sex marriage and has said the issue should go to a citizen vote.

“I’m confident that most New Mexicans believe, like I do, that it should have been settled by a vote of the people,” Martinez said Thursday. “Instead, the Supreme Court stepped in and rendered their decision. While there will surely be intense debate about this decision moving forward, I encourage New Mexicans to continue to respect one another on their discourse, as this is an important issue for many New Mexicans on both sides.”
