Spike the Roadrunner (an update)

DSC09837I wrote about Spike the Roadrunner a month ago and here’s a little update with a few new photos (of the hundreds I’ve taken – he’s very photogenic, as you can see).

We had quite a scare a couple of weeks ago. Mer had fed Spike his morning mouse. We were standing within arm’s reach of Spike, who was perched on the wall between us and the neighbor’s yard. Suddenly, Spooky the black cat leapt from the far side of the wall and landed on Spike. It was as startling as any horror movie. Spike squawked, Mer shrieked, and I exclaimed, “Son of a Bitch!” to my own great surprise. Spike managed to fly off. Spooky disappeared – lucky for him, because I was stalking him brick in hand. Spike ran down the road toward Indian School and its traffic. We watched him run around the corner, so we knew he was probably OK but feared we’d never see him again.

To our great relief, Spike clattered for food from the rooftop the next morning. He looked a bit disheveled but uninjured. He doesn’t return every day or twice a day, as he used to, but we hope that means better chances for his survival.

Eugene Robinson: Which Romney will show up to the debate? – The Washington Post

By Eugene Robinson, Monday, October 1, 5:21 PM The Washington Post

Wednesday’s presidential debate promises sharp contrasts. One candidate wants to repeal Obamacare, one candidate invented it. One opposed the auto industry bailout, one takes credit for it. One doubts the scientific consensus about climate change, one believes in it. One wants to “voucherize” Medicare, one wants to save it. One dismisses nearly half of Americans as a bunch of moochers, and one claims to champion the struggling middle class.

It promises to be an epic clash: Mitt Romney vs. Mitt Romney. Oh, and President Obama will be there, too.

Conservative activist circles are abuzz with a new conspiracy theory: Polls showing President Obama with a growing lead over Mitt Romney are deliberately being skewed by the Liberal Mainstream Media so Republicans will be disheartened and stay home on Election Day.

This is denial and self-delusion but not of the harmless kind. It’s a false narrative that encourages the Republican Party to take the wrong lessons from this election, no matter the outcome. …

“They’re trying to wrap this up before the debates even start because I think they’re worried about the debates,” radio host Rush Limbaugh told his audience. “I think they’re trying to get this election finished and in the can by suppressing your vote and depressing you so that you just don’t think there’s any reason to vote, that it’s hopeless. They want you making other plans.” …

If a polling sample shows Democrats outnumbering Republicans by, say, 32 percent to 24 percent (with most of the rest calling themselves independents), GOP partisans shouldn’t worry about a conspiracy. They should worry that this is a snapshot of how Americans feel about the two major parties.

It’s not the polls, it’s the policies. Now that’s a reason for Republicans to be depressed.

The gasbag Limbaugh accusing Democrats of voter suppression. Ironic much? What a sleazy bastard. He’s near the top of graves I want to piss on someday.

Samuel L Jackson Says, "Wake the F*** Up!" – word!

Samuel L Jackson Says, "Wake the F*** Up!"

If you live in a swing state as I do, you’re probably already sick of being inundated with massive political ads. This one, however, is just a little different. Here, Actor Samuel L Jackson uses a now-infamous children’s book as a premise for a short piece urging voters to Wake Up and realize what Obama stands for, and what we risk with a Romney presidency.

Warning! Not for the kids, or sensitive constitutions. The language is not bleeped. [follow the link]

The linked version actually bleeps all the obscenities that are part of the Republican platform.

"It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds." — Sam Adams
