About an hour into the session, Anderson walked up to a whiteboard and took out a magic marker. “I’m going to write down a word, and you guys free-associate with whatever comes to mind,” she said. The first word she wrote was “Democrat.”

“Young people,” one woman called out.

“Liberal,” another said. Followed by: “Diverse.” “Bill Clinton.”“Change.”“Open-minded.”“Spending.”“Handouts.”“Green.”“More science-based.”

When Anderson then wrote “Republican,” the outburst was immediate and vehement: “Corporate greed.”“Old.”“Middle-aged white men.” “Rich.” “Religious.” “Conservative.” “Hypocritical.” “Military retirees.” “Narrow-minded.” “Rigid.” “Not progressive.” “Polarizing.” “Stuck in their ways.” “Farmers.” …

“What would be the sign to you that the Republican Party is moving in the right direction?” Anderson asked them.

“Maybe actually pass something?” suggested a 28-year-old schoolteacher named Courtney, who also identified herself as conservative.

The session with the young men was equally jarring. None of them expressed great enthusiasm for Obama. But their depiction of Republicans was even more lacerating than the women’s had been. “Racist,” “out of touch” and “hateful” made the list — “and put ‘1950s’ on there too!” one called out.

Showing a reverence for understatement, Anderson said: “A lot of those words you used to describe Republicans are negative. What could they say or do to make you feel more positive about the Republican Party?”

“Be more pro-science,” said a 22-year-old moderate named Jack. “Embrace technology and change.”

Ted Cruz, the G.O.P.’s Nasty Newcomer – NYTimes.com

Ted Cruz, a Republican freshman in the Senate who has been front and center in his party’s effort to squash Chuck Hagel’s nomination as secretary of defense, has a problem. He’s an ornery, swaggering piece of work. Just six weeks since his arrival on Capitol Hill, he’s already known for his naysaying, his nit-picking and his itch to upbraid lawmakers who are vastly senior to him, who have sacrificed more than he has and who deserve a measure of respect, or at least an iota of courtesy. Courtesy isn’t Cruz’s métier. Grandstanding and browbeating are.

Criminal in Santa Fe or Consultant in Tacoma — drug law madness

New Mexico should not be spending money to arrest, prosecute, and punish people whom another state considers entrepreneurs and consultants. Santa Fe should make sure this guy provides a safe work environment, pays his workers minimum wage, and pays his taxes. If we are going to arrest this guy, sentence him to consult in Washington and garnish his fee. peace, mjh

Santa Fe police are looking for a 34-year-old man they say was growing marijuana inside a south-side Santa Fe commercial building.

Investigators haven’t been able to locate Marshall Duran since executing a search warrant at a structure located off Jorgensen Lane near Rufina Street on Tuesday.

“We believe he is a major player in the drug industry here in Santa Fe,” Capt. Aric Wheeler said Thursday.

Jeff, Who Lives at Home (4 stars)

We watched Jeff, Who Lives at Home (Netflix streaming). This is a surprisingly effective slow and quiet film that starts out being about a slacker and his mal-adjusted family, but it becomes something much more moving. Everyone in  the small ensemble is very good: Jason Segal (a favorite of ours), Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon, Judy Greer, and Rae Dawn Chong. I’m tempted to give it 5 stars — we talked about it a long time after — but it is almost too low-key for that.

Dispatched from his basement room on an errand for his mother, slacker Jeff might discover his destiny (finally) when he spends the day with his brother as he tracks his possibly adulterous wife.
