The story in words:

Last May, I was driving east of Pie Town and the Sawtooth Mountains (New

Mexico’s, not Idaho’s) on my way to Datil. I passed this herd of elk at 50 or 60 mph. It took a moment to register what I had just seen

so close to the road. I turned around, turned on my camera, and slowly drove back, sure I would spook them. They were very generous in

posing just long enough. Most of them seem to be looking towards traffic from Pie Town, while the others look at me. One of those magical

moments. mjh
