Cloisonné bug
As MR dubbed it. A half a dozen of these appeared one day only on an early-blooming chamisa. It is diligently sucking the rain off the blossoms.

merlin (falcon)
A merlin was sighted frequently in our neighborhood between November and mid-February. This photo may have been the last time I saw one, a month ago. www.flickr.com/photos/mjhinton/tags/merlins/

From my ornithologist friend: "we think its a Calliope Hummingbird, either a female or young."

coyote and mallards
On the west side of the Rio Grande. Seen from the east side, hiking the Aldo Leopold trail in Albuquerque, NM. Great trail from the Rio Grande Nature Center almost to Montaño Bridge. The first part of the trail is paved; most is sandy soil, running close to the river.
