From a study published in “Biology,” MRIs of self-reported liberals found more volume in the anterior cingulate cortex of the brain, which provides tolerance to uncertainty, whereas self-reported conservatives had more volume in the right amygdala, where fear is processed.

From another study published in “Current Biology”: “In general, liberals are more open-minded, creative, curious, and novelty seeking, whereas conservatives are more orderly, conventional, and better organized.” And another study in the journal “Dreaming” that is even less responsive to your question but still interesting found conservatives slept more soundly and had mundane dreams while liberals were more restless sleepers with bizarre dreams.

I resisted linking to a study that showed that when packaging compared energy efficient bulbs to wasteful bulbs without comment, conservatives and liberals both bought energy efficiency. But when packaging added environmental messages, conservatives shunned those bulbs. peace, mjh

“Weather Fact: April is Albuquerque’s windiest month, with an average speed of 10.2 mph. May is the next windiest, with an average of 9.9 mph, while June comes in third with an average of 9.2 mph. (Albuquerque National Weather Service)” [via abqjournal / Joe Diaz]

If you can sense the difference between 10.2 mph and 9.9 mph, more power to you. The three windiest months are in a row and we’re not a third through them. But what that leaves out are all those windy days in the months prior. And those are averages. A gust of 30mph is hardly noteworthy in Albuquerque. Sustained gusts of 60mph are not rare.

Santa Fe police are looking for a 34-year-old man they say was growing marijuana inside a south-side Santa Fe commercial building.

Investigators haven’t been able to locate Marshall Duran since executing a search warrant at a structure located off Jorgensen Lane near Rufina Street on Tuesday.

“We believe he is a major player in the drug industry here in Santa Fe,” Capt. Aric Wheeler said Thursday.

SANTA FE — A man who fired a gun near the city’s Plaza on Monday evening told police he was defending himself from someone in a vehicle who pointed a gun at him around 7 p.m.

Police didn’t cite 30-year-old Musa Nassar, owner of Santa Fe West Gallery, for that shooting near the intersection of Galisteo and West San Francisco streets because he said there had been a threat on his life, Santa Fe Police Capt. Aric Wheeler said. …

A witness on the scene Monday night described a scary scene of a man in the street firing five or so shots at a car. West San Francisco was blocked off in front of the Lensic Performing Arts Center while the shooting was investigated.

Later Monday night, Nassar was cited for a second shooting with another gun that occurred around midnight at his Sunset Ridge home, Wheeler said. Nassar told police that he believed there was someone outside, because he heard noises and a motion light turned on. He fired shots out of his bedroom window.

Police cited him with misdemeanor negligent use of a firearm, Wheeler said. The captain said police cannot allow people to fire at noises they hear outside.

“We’re not condoning people firing shots out of their bedroom window,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler said Nassar was fearful for his and his family’s safety based on threats, but Wheeler did not go into detail on them.
